The Super Mario Bros. 3 version included in Super Mario All-Stars is a remake of the original 1988 NES game, updated for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The core gameplay, overworld structure, and level design remain faithful to the original, while the presentation and audio were enhanced to take advantage of the SNES hardware. The visual improvements are immediately noticeable. Character sprites, enemies, and environments were redesigned with richer colors, smoother animations, and more detailed backgrounds. The game’s varied settings, including deserts, ice worlds, giant themed areas, sky stages, and airships, appear more vibrant while maintaining the recognizable style of the original release. Audio was also upgraded in the All-Stars version. The soundtrack composed by Koji Kondo was rearranged using the SNES sound capabilities, resulting in fuller instrumentation and clearer sound effects. The familiar music was preserved but presented with greater depth and clarity. Made of optical quality glass, the geometry is that of two concave cylindrical lenses, one on each side, and set at 90 degrees to each other- this shrinks the image as any concave lens would do. Pixelation is achieved by constructing the curves out of 16 long skinny facets across the 36 mm width, producing the 16-bit resolution effect. My color lithophane of a famous physicist serves as my first object to pixelate.
