Second and most famous son of Johann Sebastian Bach ⠀ CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACH ⠀ Following a path as his brother Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel studied law at the University of Leipzig and the University of Frankfurt, which helped him integrate into the growing bourgeois society and connect with outstanding figures of his time, including philosophers and poets. ⠀ C.P.E. Bach became a respected musician, playing the harpsichord for King Frederick II of Prussia at just 26. Despite his talent, he felt undervalued, especially after his father’s visit to court seven years later, which didn’t improve his situation. ⠀ After his godfather Telemann’s death, C.P.E. Bach took on the significant responsibility of leading church music in Hamburg. While he composed many religious works, he didn’t find it as easy as Telemann did and often reused earlier compositions. ⠀ He performed his final concert at the age of 65. ⠀ Mozart referred to him as the ‘father’ of their generation, and his playing style influenced many, leading to the term ‘Bach manner’ in Germany after 1750. His educational work, including his influential ‘Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments,’ helped shape keyboard pedagogy in the late 18th century. ⠀ C.P.E. Bach was deeply committed to preserving his family’s legacy. He ensured the survival of many of Johann Sebastian’s manuscripts. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat, BWV 243, is a musical setting of the biblical canticle Magnificat. It is scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass), and a Baroque orchestra including trumpets and timpani. It is the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by Bach. In 1723, after taking up his post as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, Bach set the text of the Magnificat in a twelve movement composition in the key of E-flat major. For a performance at Christmas he inserted four hymns (laudes) related to that feast.
