DITint your canvas before you start your drawing or under painting! This accomplishes two important things:
1)It takes away the sometimes scary blankness and “pristine” newness of the white canvas that can be very intimidating for some artists, and
2) it does a lot of work for you by establishing your mid tones immediately and helping you gauge your lights and darks.
Your paintings will go faster and easier I promise!
Try a thinnish wash of burnt sienna. It works well for many paintings including landscapes and especially portraits!
Of course this is only for work in acrylic, oil, or other opaque media, not transparent watercolor.
