My voice: I get lots of comments asking why my voice sounds the way it dose, I have a medical condition called GERDS, this condition mainly affects my resting/speaking voice causing it to sound slightly raspy! I also struggle with very severe dyslexia so i apologize for any misspelling :)

DRTrue story. I was in a zoom meeting with other ophthalmologists discussing a change to one of the main vision insurance carriers in the state.
I had particular concerns being the only pediatric ophthalmologist in the session. I raised my hand via the zoom function and waited. And waited. And waited.
Finally, I assumed the moderator didn’t know where to look, so after everyone was done speaking, I introduced myself (for the sake of the vision insurance guy in the session, who was the moderator and unknown to me).
I got as far as, “Hi, I’m Rupa Wong, a pediatric ophthalmologist…”. And, I was interrupted. I waited patiently and tried again.
And, was interrupted again. This time I started with “I’m Dr. Wong..”
“Actually, Rupa, is it? I believe Dr. XX XX has a question”, the moderator interrupted.
Then I turned disbelievingly to my husband who was sitting next to me, as we were on the zoom session via speaker phone “Are you hearing this? Is this just in my head?” No, he shook his head.
So, I interrupted “Actually I’ve been trying to speak for the last 15 minutes”, but to no avail. The moderator would not let me speak, he wanted to defer the floor to Dr. XX.
But, guess what? Dr. XX (male colleague) heard me trying to ask a question and once he had the floor, he said “I believe Dr. Wong had a question, Dr. Wong - please go, ahead”
I never demand to be called ‘Doctor’ if I’m in a room of colleagues who are on a first name basis with each other. Or if I'm in a social setting. But, for me, the sole woman in the group to be addressed by my first name, while everyone else was addressed as “Doctor”?? That makes me a bit crazy.
So, what do we do?
Keep speaking up.
Don’t let your voice be interrupted.
And, find allies where you can to help amplify your voice (male or female).
I wish this type of thing still didn't happen. I know many of you have similar stories and I'd love to hear them. But know that we can elicit change.

VOHere’s a lil trick to get a “wah” effect on your guitar, only without an actual wah pedal!
Sound familiar? This sound can be heard in Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return)’.
You’ll need a guitar with two-tone controls for the neck/middle & bridge in order to achieve this effect.
☝️ turn your neck/middle tone control all the way down to zero
✌️ toggle back & forth between all 3 pickups using the pickup selector, as if you’re stepping on a wah pedal 😎
This essentially creates a ‘heel & toe’ effect of the wah pedal on your guitar! Pretty neat, huh?
