Why Scaling Fails – Episode 2 Auto-scaling was enabled. Peak traffic hit. Pods didn’t scale. Why? Short answer: Because Kubernetes scales on signals — not traffic. Here’s what actually happened 👇 1️⃣ HPA doesn’t monitor “traffic” Most teams configure HPA based on: * CPU utilization * Memory usage * Custom metrics (if explicitly set) If traffic spikes but CPU doesn’t cross the threshold immediately, HPA does nothing. Traffic ≠ CPU instantly. 2️⃣ Metrics lag HPA checks metrics periodically (usually ~15 seconds). Add: * Metrics Server delay * Aggregation delay By the time scaling decision happens, your system is already stressed. Auto-scaling is reactive. 3️⃣ Scaling takes time Even after HPA decides to scale: * Pod scheduled * Container image pulled * Application boots * Readiness probe passes That can take 20–60 seconds. Peak traffic might already be causing failures. 4️⃣ Cluster had no capacity HPA can request more pods. But if: * Node pool max size reached * Resource quota exceeded * No available CPU/memory Pods stay in Pending state. Scaling request ≠ scaling success. 5️⃣ Wrong metric selection Maybe your bottleneck was: * Database connections * Thread pool exhaustion * I/O wait * External API dependency If CPU was low, HPA had no reason to scale. Even if users were complaining. 🧠 Real—sight: Auto-scaling reacts to pressure. It doesn’t predict it. If you expect traffic spikes: * Pre-scale manually * Use predictive scaling * Scale on meaningful custom metrics * Fix deeper bottlenecks first Seen this during a sale or traffic spike? Comment "GUIDE" to get the Cloud Interview Guide with 80 such questions and answers(FREE) In most Cloud interviews, you'd get this question: "Tell me how the Kubernetes cluster EC2 worker nodes scale." Most candidates answer: set Auto Scaling Groups to scale at a certain EC2 metric utilization like scaling regular EC2s. This answer is WRONG! Instead here is how K8s cluster worker EC2, also known as VMs or Virtual Machines, scale: Step 1: You configure HPA (Horizontal Pod Autoscaler) to increase the replica of your pods at a certain CPU/Memory/Custom Metrics threshold. Step 2: As traffic increases and the pod metric utilization crosses the threshold, HPA increases the number of pods. If there is capacity in the existing worker VMs, then the Kubernetes kube-scheduler binds that pod into the running VMs. Step 3: Traffic keeps increasing, and HPA increases the number of replicas of the pod. But now, there is no capacity left in the running VMs, so the kube-scheduler can't schedule the pod(yet!). That pod goes into pending, unschedulable state Step 4: As soon as pod(s) go to pending unschedulable state, Kubernetes node scalers (such as Cluster Autoscaler, Karpenter etc.) provisions a new node. Cluster Autoscaler requires an Auto Scaling Group where it increases the desired VM count, whereas Karpenter doesn't require an Auto Scaling Group or Node Group. Once the new VM comes up, kube-scheduler puts that pending pod into the new node. Pro tip: If you need to achieve scheduled scaling with Kubernetes, utilize KEDA which can adjust the number of pod replicas based on cron schedules. And if you want to pre-warm VMs before traffic burst, implement Cluster Overprovisioner. Both KEDA and Cluster Overprovisioner works in conjunction with the scaling mechanism explained above. Esse é o fruto do trabalho de entender bem o negócio, os requisitos, as necessidades e aplicar boas práticas de otimização de custo sem abrir mão da eficiência e segurança dos ambientes. Claro que reduzir 62% de uma fatura não é algo trivial. Se você tem uma equipe, provavelmente algumas boas práticas já estão sendo aplicadas e geralmente conseguimos algo mais conservador entre 15% e 25%. Mas... para empresas ou negócios que não têm time de T.I e usam AWS, você talvez esteja jogando dinheiro fora! Uma consultoria pode ajudar a otimizar seu ambiente, e isso o time da CloudFaster faz muito bem! 💻 Dicas do que utilizamos no ambiente desse print que nos levou a alcançar 62% de redução: ➡️ Entenda tudo o que está provisionado e consumindo na sua conta. Faça perguntas: por que isso existe? Qual a finalidade? Qual o uso? ➡️ Compreenda inclusive as políticas de auto scaling e o mínimo desses serviços. Não é porque está em container no ECS que não dá para otimizar. ➡️ Revise recursos obsoletos. Delete tudo o que não se usa ou que é antigo demais. Aquele backup de 3 anos atrás tem alguma política que justifique mantê-lo? ➡️ Otimize seus recursos e aplicações. Às vezes, atualizar a versão ou aplicar uma melhoria no servidor web faz total diferença para usar menos recurso computacional. ➡️ E por fim (e aqui onde muitos erram), após seu ambiente devidamente otimizado, ai sim, faça compromissos de 1 a 3 anos para obter descontos: RI, Savings Plans e afins. Vários alunos me reportam cenários “curiosos” onde fazendo o básico já conseguiram reduções expressivas... Here’s why⬇️ When you type 1000 instead of 100 in an API call. You were just trying to test the API quickly. Instead of sending 100 requests, you accidentally sent 1000. At first nothing seems wrong, but within seconds the server starts slowing down. CPU usage spikes, memory fills up, and everything begins to lag. You open the dashboard trying to figure out what’s happening. The logs are flooding with requests and the server is clearly struggling to keep up. Before you even get time to fix it, AWS marks the instance as unhealthy. Auto Scaling immediately terminates the instance and launches a new one to replace it. All of this happened because of one extra zero in the API call. Sometimes the smallest typo can bring down an entire server.

Cevabı açıklamada 👇👀 Hemen okumadan önce bir düşün bakalım🤔 Tamam, sunucu çöktü. Panik yok. Sırayla gidelim. İlk iş sistemi ayağa kaldır. Hızlıca horizontal scale yap, yani sunucu sayını artır. AWS, GCP, Azure fark etmez auto scaling açıksa zaten bunu otomatik yapması lazımdı. Açık değilse, şimdi manuel tetikliyorsun. Ama scale etmek tek başına yetmez. 1 milyon kullanıcı aynı anda kapıya dayandıysa, önlerine bir load balancer koyman lazım. Trafiği sunuculara eşit dağıtsın. Sonra şunu soruyorsun: bu 1 milyon istek gerçekten hepsi backend’e ulaşmak zorunda mı? Hayır. Cache koy araya. Redis, Memcached , sık istenen verileri orada tut. DB’ye her istek gitmesin. DB’ye gelen yük hâlâ fazlaysa read replica aç. Okuma işlemlerini oraya yönlendir, master’ı yazma için sakla. Hâlâ dayanamıyorsa ne yaparsın? Queue koyarsın. Kullanıcıyı sisteme almak yerine sıraya alırsın. ‘Şu an yoğunluk var, sırandasın’ mesajı verirsin. Kullanıcı bekler, sistem ölmez. Ve tüm bunları yaşamamak için load test yapılması lazımdı. k6, Locust, JMeter. Prod’a çıkmadan önce sistemi strese sokuyorsun.
