Does it ever feel like dieting has become part of your identity?? One of the hardest parts about stepping away from the stage, and really rejecting diet culture, was feeling like I was losing a piece of me. My entire life WAS bodybuilding. There was no time for anything else - just meal prep, work, exercise, sleep, repeat. I had become, Lauren Cadillac, bikini competitor. The decision to step away felt like a loss of self. If I was no longer the “fit one”, who was I? Honestly, the decision to leave that life behind was the best decision I’ve ever made though (I’m not here to knock anyone that does BB - in fact I’m grateful for my experience. Also not knocking anyone still dieting, just speaking from my own personal experience). Since I’ve done that, my mental and physical health have improved. I’ve been able to spend time with friends and family. I got engaged, started a little family with our fur baby @deweydontstopretrieving and my business grew several-fold (which is funny because I thought I had to be a successful bodybuilder to have a successful business 🙄) Oh and I can actually go out to eat, travel and have FUN (outside of COVID) If you resonate with this, I want to remind you, that you can create a new path for your life if you want it ❤️ You are more than your diet, more than the label of bodybuilder, crossfitter etc, more than your disorder and more than your body ❤️ #FeelGoodDietitian

As someone who got her start as a bikini competitor (aka the skinny version of bodybuilding) and then a fitness model, I’ve worked hard to rewrite the subconscious narrative that I need to be smaller. When I first found yoga and kettlebells, my mindset started to shift. I was actually in touch with my body—and what she needed. And trust me, she didn’t want to be skinny. She wanted to feel strong, resilient, and capable. So glad I learned that. And yes, I’ve never been happier. #flowintostrong #strongnotskinny #fitness #motivation #womenwholift

I went from 322 lbs to Biggest Loser Trainer to bikini competitor and then BOOM, all the stress and damage i did to my body taking it too far and pushing it too far because I thought I needed to…hormonal havoc. Many competitors actually suffer from hormonal damage once they set off the stage. It’s something not discussed very often. PS. I was SO small, my 13 yr old step daughter fit into my competition dress. Not having thyroid, I probably shouldn’t have pushed AS much as I did (still want to compete again- just take more time to do it, vs I did my first comp in less than 12 weeks. Not smart) Then when I stepped off stage I noticed my periods getting wonky about 8 months post bulk phase and that’s when all my perimenopause started. Did it play a role? Maybe. Did my lack of thyroid also play a role? I believe so. All this to say, everyone talks about and shows the opposite transition. From a larger body to a smaller body. And although my current body may not be as “awe” worthy as my competition body. I’m in pretty damn awe of it. The body I’m in has crawled back from perimenopause hell. No longer suffering from the terrible symptoms of night sweats, rapid belly weight gain, insomnia, acne and a whole lotta other symptoms It’s also served me in getting through one of the darkest years of my life with a deep depression, anxiety and onset OCD. Bodies ebb and flow. Life throws curve balls. I know it’s not always easy but if you’re struggling with gaining weight or having a different body composition than before. I understand. Life. Hormones. Mental health and physical health don’t always give us what we want but it’s up to us to fight like hell to slowly get back to ourselves.

A bit of my story… I used to be a bikini competitor with a dream to turn pro - not surprising, I want to take everything I do to the extreme. Okay, but my real dream underneath it all? I didn’t want to be the flat booty girl anymore. I just wanted some friggin glutes! No one told me you could literally grow them or I would have tried sooner. I was doing all of your typical bodybuilding movements required to grow glutes. An occasional barbell squat, bands around my knees (of course), wide stance everything, deadlift variations, thrust all the time, and a million+ reps on the hip abduction machine. I put in 2 years of hard work, and instead of nice glutes, I was left with chronic hip pain. I did what anyone would do - rest. I rested until the pain went away, started lifting again, and then it came back. This cycle repeated itself…multiple times. I did the next thing that anyone would do - I started stretching for 10-15 minutes before lifting. This helped a little, but still, the pain was there. The straw that broke the camels back was a set of 225# sumo deadlifts. The pain in my right hip became excruciating, and it never let go. Of course I tried training around it, providing an opportunity for my left hip and back to join the party. I had just been dragged through the mud recovering from hormonal imbalances, an eating disorder, and a pointless gallbladder removal…now this. I was a 20 year old with the hips of an 80 year old. Something as simple as walking was painful. My frustration was at an all time high. I knew I had to do something, because I couldn’t fathom living the rest of my life this way. It took me about 6 years to solve the “mystery” of my hips. Many times I thought it impossible to achieve, but I kept going, kept searching. I’m now 31 years old squatting more weight and more frequently than I have in my entire life. Most importantly - I feel better than ever. I’m here to show you that your 30s, 40s, and beyond don’t have to be full of aches and pains.
