If birdsong could be seen, it might look something like this. Here, the voice of a linnet, Linaria cannabina, is translated into a three dimensional field of points. Each cluster reflects acoustic proximity, syllables and motifs of the song gathering into small islands of texture. What the ear hears as fluid melody becomes a landscape of frequency, rhythm and harmonic relationships suspended in space. Complex patterns of pitch, timing and timbre carry information about territory, courtship, identity and context. When these layers are visualized, it becomes easier to sense how structured these signals really are, closer to a living score than a simple “tweet”. Continuing on with our sound week... here at the Lab of Ornithology we have multiple ways we collect audio as a means to understand birds and other species and to monitor ecosystem health. Like at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics*, researchers use passive, autonomous listening devices (seen at the end of this reel). These devices can run for long periods without people present allowing researchers to monitor a wide area and collect unbiased, long-term data on animal vocalizations and soundscapes. These clips are from a video made by our Center for Conservation Media, which showcases 3 projects within Southeast Asia. The projects focus on empowering local researchers and communities to use bioacoustics for biodiversity monitoring and conservation. The initiative supports community-led research, provides training in bioacoustic methods, and supplies equipment through programs like the Bioacoustics Equipment and Training (BEAT) Program.
