Interesting study out of Harvard’s Nurses and Health Professionals database showing strong correlation of meat consumption with diabetes. This has also been seen in the UK Biobank, in the EPIC European data, and especially in China, where they have seen 17 fold increase in diabetes while having a 75%increase in meat consumption. And these studies control for possible confounders. People think that diabetes is caused by sugar consumption. I can see where that would make sense. If you eat sugar, and you’re diabetic, your blood sugar goes up. However, if you look at populations that eat high amounts of carbohydrates and lower amounts of fat, they have a very low risk of diabetes. In fact, the rice diet has been one of the most successful diets for treating diabetes. Why is that? All of our cells have transport capabilities to bring carbohydrates into the cell as a primary fuel. There is a lock and key mechanism to get sugar into the cell. The key is insulin and the lock is the GLUT4 receptor. If, however, fat gets into the cell, especially muscle cells since muscle is the primary utilizer of sugar, the fat can interfere with the cells ability to make the GLUT4 receptor, and the cell then becomes more resistant to insulin. Now that the cell is more insulin resistant, sugars will start to rise. This is how insulin resistance begins. There are, of course other factors involved and it is a complex process, but the association between meat and diabetes has been seen over many different studies.

Spectacular videos of the coral spawning are shedding new light on the role cryopreservation is playing in advancing coral restoration efforts.⁠ ⁠ These videos capture the moment Acropora millepora corals spawned in November 2024 at the Horniman Museum in London, releasing clouds of tiny bundles glimmering against the artificial darkness of the tanks. The team intercepted Acropora millepora sperm from this spawning and placed it in a deep freeze using a specialised cryoprotectant agent to keep the cells alive during freezing. This doesn’t prove causation — light might worsen mood, or people with worse mood might simply stay up later around artificial light.
