Here’s to those summer nights! Sound on! Often heard, but seldom seen, the whip-poor-will chants its name on summer nights in Penn’s Woods. The call carries about half a mile. You may have a chance to see them by the “glowing” of their red or bright orange eyes in the glare of headlights, as they often sit along roadsides waiting for a tasty meal to fly by. Their “eyeshine” is caused by a reflective layer at the back of the retina called the tapetum. The tapetum amplifies small amounts of light by passing it back through the retina a second time. Whip-poor-wills are difficult to detect after nesting season when calling ceases. Whip-poor-wills are often clustered, so if you hear one, you may hear several at a location on any night they are vocalizing.
