After decades of storing energy in its thick succulent leaves, it sends up a towering flower stalk that can reach 20 to 30 feet tall and grow nearly a foot per week. This dramatic flowering phase is called monocarpic blooming, meaning the plant flowers once and then dies after exhausting its stored energy.
