BOWhen I tell founders that CAC reg does NOT secure their name, they are usually confused 😕
And I totally get it...people who aren’t business lawyers have been telling you to register with CAC so you don’t “LOSE” your dream name.
That’s WRONG!
If your Dream Name is not available with CAC, don’t panic because NEWS FLASH…
🚨Your CAC Name is not your Brand name!!

What CAC registration gives you is the right to conduct business activities in Nigeria. That’s why foreigners first have to register a Nigerian company with CAC before they can operate in Nigeria.
So CAC Reg = I can Legally do Business in Nigeria.
If you want ownership over a business name so that nobody else in your industry can use that name to promote their own products / services you need to get a Trademark.
A TRADEMARK = I have exclusive ownership rights over my Name & Logo to promote my product/service in my Niche.
CAC = Your Corporate Identity
Trademark = Your Brand Identity...the name you’re known with. The name your clients & customers say when referring to you.
It’s that brand identity you should die on the line to secure (Not the name on your CAC Certificate)
Think about it Nobody says “I want to buy a MTN Nigeria Communications PLC SIM card” You simply say “MTN”
That’s the brand name that identifies the company.
That’s what should be promoted with a TRADEMARK.
So if you have a UNIQUE Business name, Product name, Service Name, YouTube Channel name, Blog name, Pen name, Artist name, Stage name etc that you don’t want others to use then you should get it TRADEMARKED ™️
