To my younger self, this is the moment you never thought possible. To my older self, this is only the beginning. Years of sacrifice, resilience, and an unshakable belief in change have led me here, to the heart of the United Nations. But this moment is bigger than me. It’s for the women who were never given a seat at the table. The ones who fought without recognition, who shaped history without ever being written into it. It’s for my ancestors, who could never have imagined standing in spaces like this but whose strength carried me here. And it’s for the voices still unheard, the change still to come, and the generations who will follow. Because the work is far from over. When they say women and girls don’t belong in diplomacy…. It’s FALSE!🙅🏻‍♀️ For too long, international relations and diplomacy have been seen as a man’s world, shaped by men, led by men, and dominated by their voices. (And trust me, I can definitely tell from by diplomatic national service) But, the narrative is changing! ✨ At this year’s #CSW69 with @unwomen the halls of the United Nations were filled with the power, strengthen and expertise and women from across the globe. From old generation diplomats to young change makers, from ministers to UN Youth Delegates, women were at the forefront, advocating and shaping this CSW! 🚨Yet, we are not completely there. Women remain underrepresented in key leadership roles at the UN and in global governance. We still see few women holding leading positions in peace negotiations, having directorate roles or holding top diplomatic roles. The road to true gender equality passes through the diplomatic field and it is long, but the momentum undeniable. 💡The next generation is proof that change is here. Many UN Youth Delegates present were young women, actively shaping their conversations on peace, security, human rights, and more. I still wonder what happens after. Where do we get lost between being included and holding higher positions? More women in diplomacy means more inclusive, effective, and transformative solutions. I was honored to join the Nigerian Women’s Day Celebration at the CSW69 | Beijing+30 event at the United Nations in New York, at the invitation of the Minister for Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim @immaculateiman. This landmark gathering marked three decades of resilience, impact, and progress in advancing Nigerian women’s rights, protection, and economic empowerment. As part of the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69)—a premier global platform for reviewing progress on gender equality—I had the privilege of participating in ‘The Custodians: Heart to Pursue Greatness’ panel session. This discussion brought together thought leaders, policymakers, and advocates to reflect on Nigeria’s strides in the 12 critical areas of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) and the work still ahead. Standing alongside an extraordinary assembly of women—Ministers, Commissioners, First Ladies of Nigerian states, and other influential leaders—reinforced the urgency of strengthening policies, legal frameworks, and initiatives that uplift and support women across Nigeria. As we commemorate 30 years of progress, we must remain steadfast in driving meaningful change and creating opportunities for every woman to thrive. My deepest appreciation goes to the First Lady of the Republic of Nigeria and Senator Oluremi Tinubu @officialoluremitinubu for her unwavering leadership and dedication to the advancement of women. I also extend my gratitude to the First Ladies of Nigerian states, whose presence and commitment continue to inspire progress.
