Most people drive past this building every day without realizing what’s inside. On 313 Day, it feels like the perfect time to talk about a piece of Detroit history that deserves a second life. Just west of downtown, near MotorCity Casino, sits the former Trinity Episcopal Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. For generations, this church served as a place of worship and community gathering in Detroit. The sanctuary alone seats more than 300 people, and the building spans over 13,000 square feet on nearly ¾ of an acre. Inside you’ll still find incredible architectural details, historic stained glass, and a sanctuary designed to inspire the people who gathered there. What makes this building even more interesting is that it hasn’t simply sat abandoned. About $800,000 was invested into improvements, including updates to the boiler, restrooms, and other systems. Part of the building was even used as a daycare until recently, meaning the infrastructure for community use is already here. From the roof, you can see nearly the entire city, with the Detroit skyline in one direction and the Ambassador Bridge in the other. Today, the building is ready for its next chapter. Could it become housing?A nonprofit headquarters?A community center?Artist lofts?Or even a church again? The possibilities are endless. The property is currently listed by Kevin Messier, and if you’re curious about the space or want to explore what could be done with it, I’d be happy to walk you through it. 👇 Drop “313” in the comments or send me a DM if you want more information or would like to schedule a private tour. Happy 313 Day, Detroit. #313day #detroithistory #historicdetroit #detroitarchitecture #detroitrealestate

In the heart of Detroit lies the West Vernor–Springwells Historic District, a captivating area steeped in rich history and cultural transformation. Originally a tranquil farming community, this district began its evolution in the late 19th century as industrial growth swept through Detroit. The once expansive farms were gradually subdivided, paving the way for commercial development along what is now known as Vernor Highway. As the 20th century approached, the neighborhood experienced a significant surge in population, largely due to the influx of German immigrants. In response to this growing community, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit established St. Gabriel’s Church in 1915 at the bustling intersection of Vernor and Norman. This church became a cornerstone of the community, nurturing its spiritual life and fostering connections among residents. The construction of the nearby Ford River Rouge Complex in the 1910s and 1920s further propelled the district’s growth, leading to the emergence of a vibrant commercial landscape. Brick storefronts began to line the streets, housing a variety of businesses that catered to the needs of the expanding population. The architectural charm of the district is highlighted by the former Rio Theatre, designed by Cyril Edward Schley, which stands as a striking reminder of the area’s cultural significance.Throughout the decades, the West Vernor–Springwells Historic District continued to evolve. In the 1950s, African American families began to settle in the neighborhood, followed by an influx of Hispanic residents in the 1980s, enriching the cultural tapestry of the area. The St. Gabriel’s Church complex remains a vital part of this story, featuring a beautiful Italian Renaissance style rectory and the original Romanesque Revival church, which has been repurposed as a parish school.Today, the West Vernor #detroitisavibe #detroit #itsadetroitthang #detroitdetermination #viralreels

Most people walk right past this… Tucked along the riverfront sits Ste. Anne de Detroit Catholic Church—one of the oldest continuously operating Catholic parishes in the entire country, dating back to 1701. Before the skyline… Before the industry… Before Detroit became Detroit… This was here. What you’re looking at isn’t just a building—it’s layers of history: fires, rebuilds, generations of families, and over 300 years of stories still echoing through these walls. And somehow… it’s still standing. Still overlooked. Still sacred. Still Detroit. 📍Have you ever noticed this place? #DetroitHistory #HiddenDetroit #SteAnneDetroit #HistoryLovesCompany #DetroitRiverfront HistoricDetroit MichiganHistory ArchitectureLovers ExploreDetroit

Mariners Church has been a symbol of hope and community in Detroit since its founding in 1842 by Julia Ann Anderson. She created the church to provide a spiritual home for sailors and marginalized individuals, ensuring free pews for worship. The striking Perpendicular Gothic architecture, designed by C.N. Otis, reflects its deep maritime roots, with art and stained glass windows celebrating the Great Lakes.Throughout its history, Mariners Church has played a vital role in the Underground Railroad. A hidden tunnel discovered during the church’s relocation in 1955 revealed its past as a refuge for those escaping slavery. This secret passage allowed freedom seekers to find safety and support within its walls, adding to the church’s legacy of compassion and service. The church also honors the memory of sailors lost at sea, particularly those from the tragic sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. On November 11 of that year, Bishop Richard Ingalls Sr. rang the church bell 29 times to commemorate each lost sailor. This heartfelt tribute became a cherished tradition, celebrated annually during the Great Lakes Memorial Service, where the bells ring again to remember those who perished at sea.Today, Mariners Church continues to serve the community with Sunday services, Bible studies, and outreach programs. It remains a welcoming place for all, regardless of background, fostering unity and compassion in the spirit of its founding principles. #detroit #detroitisavibe #itsadetroitthang #detroitdetermination #reelsviral

That’s a wrap! Over the last few weeks, our team hosted four back-to-back Grounds for Discussion: Coffee & Conversation hours throughout District 7. We gathered over coffee and learned your priorities for creating neighborhoods where every resident can thrive. Thank you to every resident who attended and shared the information with a neighbor. Thank you to our friends at the Howard Family Bookstore, Union Carpenters & Millwrights Training Center, Metropolitan Church of God, and Mary’s Grill for allowing us to use your spaces. Thank you to the folks at Detroit Brew-Ti-Ful for providing coffee and treats. This is how we build community. The primary focus for this past coffee hours series was to prepare for the city’s budget season. I look forward to hosting more coffee hours throughout the district with different grounds for discussion. What topics would you like to cover beginning in April? #detroitd7 #d7community
