If the measure is approved, Massachusetts would be the first U.S. state to allow ride-hailing drivers to unionize. Today, Massachusetts ride-hailing drivers are not classified as employees. Companies like Uber and Lyft hire them as contract workers or independent contractors. That means the National Labor Relations Act, which grants employees the right to organize, does not apply to them. Here’s what you MUST check before signing your next contract 👇 1️⃣ Your Basic Salary (50% Rule) Your basic pay must be at least 50% of your CTC now. (Companies can’t reduce PF or gratuity by lowering your basic.) 2️⃣ Floor Wage Compliance There is now a national minimum pay benchmark. Your offer cannot go below this. Check this line clearly. 3️⃣ Mandatory Appointment Letter Every company — small or big — MUST issue a formal appointment letter. No letter = no job security. 4️⃣ Working Hours Clarity Under the new code: 48 hours/week Max 8 hours/day Mandatory breaks Contracts MUST mention this. This morning the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced the new Government's Growth Plan—a plan that will put more money back into the pockets of individuals and businesses. The Plan is clear about how the United Kingdom strives for economic growth. You cannot tax your way to prosperity: growth comes from setting businesses free, creating the incentives to grow, to invest, and to employ more people. And the success of those businesses is where the public money comes from, through taxes, to pay for public services. A slow-growing economy—or worse a declining economy—means less money for the NHS, schools, social care, policing, and all the other services we care about. That is why I was delighted to see the Chancellor set out a bold, tax-cutting plan to get our economy growing properly again. In particular, I was pleased to see plans to simplify IR35, which is legislation that applies to contract workers who operate as a limited company, working for a third party to provide specialist services. With over 12,000 registered self-employed in the Buckingham constituency—and knowing what a vital role the self-employed and entrepreneurs played in growing the economy after the last Labour government crashed the economy in the noughties—it is vital we do all we can to support an entrepreneurial spirit. This will see more people in Bucks setting up their own ventures—a point I made to the Chancellor in the House of Commons. Overall, this was a superb set of measures to get the economy growing—and a growing economy means a more prosperous life for everyone!
