The following description explains the second step in the cremation process. The first step occurs when the deceased is respectfully placed into the cremation chamber, also known as a cremation retort, where cremation takes place.
After the cremation is completed and the cremated remains have cooled, the next step is called processing. During this step, the remaining bone fragments are carefully collected and placed into a specialized processor. This equipment gently reduces the fragments into the fine, sand-like consistency that most people commonly refer to as “ashes.”
It is important to understand that what families receive are processed cremated remains, which are primarily composed of bone fragments that have been respectfully reduced in size. Any non-organic materials, such as metal from medical implants or prosthetics, are carefully removed during this step.
Once processing is complete, the cremated remains are placed into a temporary container or an urn selected by the family and returned to the next of kin.
