Toronto ✨ Last week I had the absolute dream of finally touring Deciem HQ and the labs! It was so inspiring, and you could really feel Brandon everywhere. From the little touches in the lab to the ‘Incubator’ (where they’re nurturing so many of his brilliant ideas that haven’t yet come to life). It was honestly magic. And I loved meeting @dakotakisaacs who has serious Brandon energy and lots of exciting secrets! 🫶 I was sad I never got to go there with Brandon, but being there made me feel so close. His spirit was absolutely alive and kicking in Toronto. Half of me wanted to use a sad song for this reel, but I thought something upbeat and energetic felt much more Brandon! 💫 I also had a sneak peek at some top secret new launches (lab samples in my bag. Eek!!). The only one I can tell you about is brand new The Ordinary PHA 5% Exfoliating Lip Serum, which is launching very soon. My review is linked in bio & stories. The rest… you’ll just have to stay tuned for. 👀 And if you, like me, adored Brandon too, I’ve popped a link in my bio and stories to the blog post I wrote in tribute to him when he passed away. [some PR] Tips for chemical exfoliation beginners: BHAs (salicylic acid, betaine salicylate) are oil soluble, therefore good for clearing open pores. AHAs (mainly glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids) are water soluble, therefore good for surface texture issues and for purging out closed clogs. Start slow! If you've never used acids before, you don't really know what your skin can handle, and overexfoliation is a real pain (literally) to have to heal from. Most BHA products are 2% salicylic acid, which is pretty standard, but depending on the formulation and your skin, even that can be harsh. Like I personally wouldn't use Stridex in the red box every day. The @cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid uses a gentler BHA that's generally safer to start out with. For AHAs, look for something between 5-8% to start out with. There are some that are between 10-20%, which I would say is not quite peel strength but is still more intense than I'd consider a good idea for frequent use. Also, don't start out by using an acid product every day. Try once every other day or just a couple of times a week and see how your skin handles it, then increase the frequency and/or strength of product as needed once you have an idea of your skin's tolerance levels. And for most people, there's no point in spending a ton of money on high end brands' AHA and BHA products! Acids aren't particularly expensive ingredients and brands like @cosrx and @theordinary make great basic AHA and BHA products that do what they're supposed to, without a bunch of add-ons that increase the price without much difference in effectiveness.
