I was honestly shocked 😱 Last October I did a DEXA body scan—my third one ever.
But for the first time, I saw my visceral fat. I assumed it would be basically zero.
It was almost 1 pound. So what does that mean? Subcutaneous fat is the fat you can pinch (hips, thighs, arms) — is not a metabolic problem. Visceral fat is the deeper fat around your organs.
This is the fat that drives insulin resistance, inflammation, and metabolic disease. Most research suggests ~2.2–5 lbs of visceral fat is where risk really starts climbing.
Which means… it doesn’t take much. And with perimenopause & the drop of estrogen around the corner for me, I am paying CLOSE attention. Here’s the nuance most people miss 👇
How much fat you can store safely under the skin before it spills into visceral fat is partly genetic. But here is the part you CAN control: 
👉 Having healthy, active muscle. Muscle is your metabolic buffer.
It’s what protects you as energy intake goes up and life happens. And this is why BMI and the scale don’t tell us much!
They don’t tell you where fat is stored or how much muscle you have. A DEXA scan can give a clearer picture. But not everyone can (or wants to) get one of those. Another way, is to understand your metabolic labs and markers. Want to know which markers matter most?

I’m not against Ozempic. But I do think the way it’s being prescribed should be illegal. GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic can be life-changing for people with obesity or diabetes. They mimic a natural hormone, reduce appetite, and help with blood sugar regulation. But they’re being handed out without the most basic support systems in place. I believe it should be illegal to prescribe these medications without: • A nutrition consult to educate patients on their increased protein needs • A strength training plan to preserve muscle mass • And physician oversight to monitor for serious side effects We’re seeing increased risks of pancreatitis, thyroid issues, kidney problems, and even bowel obstruction with long-term use, yet most people aren’t being told this. They’re not getting a DEXA scan. They’re not tracking their labs. I’ve helped patients lose over 100 pounds naturally, without GLP-1s, by using food as a powerful, targeted tool to regulate hormones, peptides, brain chemistry, and the microbiome. Yes, these drugs can be a tool. But they are not a cure. And they should never replace the foundational work of building real, lasting health.

The test measures bone density, muscle mass, and body fat — key indicators of long-term health. @peterattiamd’s practice, which he calls “Medicine 3.0,” is driven by the patient and focused on prevention. “We’re dying of heart disease, we’re dying from stroke, cancer, dementia, Type 2 diabetes, and we I think have sort of come to realize that, ‘Hey, the playbook of Medicine 2.0, which is treat a disease when a disease is present,’ doesn’t seem to work as well,” he says. “And so the first principle of Medicine 3.0 is you have to take a much longer arc on the prevention of chronic disease.”

That’s why after massive weight loss, you might still get labeled “obese” on paper… even when your health has drastically improved. Instead, get a DEXA scan or InBody scan to measure your body fat percentage, a far better indicator of where you truly stand. At the end of the day, body fat percentage and visceral fat are the real MVPs of health metrics, not some outdated chart from the early 1800s. After 11 years of eating plant-based and staying active, I wanted to take a deeper look at my health and see how I could optimise it further. I went to @everlab_health, a longevity clinic, and did a full body health assessment for the first time! I started with a baseline assessment with Dr Roya Tabatabai, a longevity doctor, to go through my history and build a plan. From there they tested 137 biomarkers, including blood tests, a gut microbiome test, physical fitness assessment, DEXA scan, and a nutrition review with a dietitian. Then we had a diagnostics review to go over all the results and create a 6 month plan. Overall my results were great with just a few areas to focus on, and I now have a personalised plan to improve those. Because of my family history with dementia, I got genetic testing and it was really reassuring to find out that my APOE gene type is low risk. It’s also reassuring to see that my lifestyle over the last decade has really been healthy🌿🙌🏼 My biological age even came back as 21, seven years younger than my actual age. I love that all my results and protocols are in the app, making it easy to access, track, and follow. The app even pulls in past health tests so you can see trends over the years. Having this level of detail and personalised guidance feels much more valuable than a regular GP visit. Seeing what is happening inside my body and having a clear plan makes it much easier to keep building habits that will benefit me for years to come! #everlab #longevity
