POV: You’re a DPT student practicing special tests and accidentally get a positive Allen test on your friend 👀 The Allen Test assesses the radial and ulnar arteries. We hold both, have the patient repeatedly open/close their hand, then release one artery at a time to observe the return of circulation. When they pump their hand it turns white, and when the pt stops holding their artery, the color returns. While this doesn’t diagnose anything by itself, it’s a great reminder of how interconnected circulation, tissue health, and hand function really are!! 🖐️ 🩸 PT school keeps me humble, you think you’re just practicing for an exam, and suddenly you’re running a full assessment on your friends 😭🙃 For real I feel like we can’t go a single lab without someone testing positive for a special test😂😂😂😂 #spt #dpt #fitness #physicaltherapist #physiotherapy #allentest

From a physical therapy perspective, strengthening the calf–Achilles complex improves load tolerance, enhances gait mechanics, and reduces risk of common injuries like Achilles tendinopathy and calf strains.

Whether you’re rehabbing or preventing injury, targeted loading (think: eccentric heel drops and progressive resistance) is key. Here are some exercises you can add to your routine. 🚨Disclaimer: I am a DPT student on my own personal running/fitness journey. These are just some of the things I am applying to my own routine. Got stiffness in your mid-back? That’s your thoracic spine, and when it doesn’t move well, your shoulders, neck, and even low back can pay the price. Mobility here = better posture, safer lifting, and less pain. 🙌 Today, our DPT student intern Taylor shows us 4 easy moves you can do at home to help improve your thoracic spine mobility: 1️⃣ Wall Rotations How: Stand with your back to the wall, rotate one arm up and over. Why it works: Trains controlled rotation + extension through your mid-back. 2️⃣ Open Books How: Lie on your side, knees bent, open your top arm across your body. Why it works: Gently restores rotational mobility and relieves stiffness. 3️⃣ Prayer Stretch How: Kneel with arms on a bench, sink your chest down toward the floor. Why it works: Targets extension in the thoracic spine + lengthens lats. 4️⃣ Kneeling Rotations How: On hands and knees, place one hand behind your head and rotate elbow toward the ceiling. Some advanced interventions as we begin to incorporate some return to sport activities as part of his spinal cord injury rehab program. He has come such a long way and has gotten so much motor return in his lower extremities 🙏🏾 Our ultimate goal is to return to all of the recreational activities he engaged in prior to his injury, including soccer. 1️⃣ Dynamic planking set up using @blazepod which allows to work on multiple things: core control in order to stabilize the trunk while lifting one upper extremity to tap the pod, dynamic single leg balance while lifting one lower extremity to tap the pod, and reaction time which is an important component of many sports. We did this as a 30 sec circuit with a travel in between each bout (side shuffling down the hall) and gave target number of hits to increase speed each time. 2️⃣ Vertically resisted squats: to improve leg strength and force production. This was a team collaboration with my DPT student @_melindapowers 🤗 the heel raise targets the plantarflexors, an important muscle group as we’re beginning to add more plyometrics on land (outside of the pool), and the resistance from the two heavy therabands is aimed at improving force production. Motor learning tip! Last night in our workshop, one of the top areas people wanted to grow and learn in for FND was in the area of improving motor control. And we have a brilliant motor control training idea from our fellow and DPT student this week! This is perfect if you have you ever wondered how action observation can boost gait improvement? 🚶‍♀️ In this example we used: 🧠Walking on a treadmill with a new pattern (this was after a lot of therapy working on a dystonic gait pattern) 🧠A phone video behind the person on the treadmill 🧠Airplay this view to the screen in front of the person 🧠Magnify the positive feedback of the gait pattern during walking This was VERY EFFECTIVE for this person as the sensory feedback from the limb is impaired—so the heightened feedback was SO HELPFUL!
