What the heck is a “diaphragm vacuum” and why do it? I’ll answer this and dozens of other diaphragm dilemmas at my next in person and online opportunities covering @body.by.breath material. Decompose your Diaphragm with me over the next few weeks at @kripalucenter western Massachusetts (online option too!) or with me at @happyhips.is in Iceland. The diaphragm vacuum suctions and tractions your interior tissues from pelvic floor to face. It takes practice and can feel unusual and bizarre at first. Nikki @thebellemethod used this technique to help reduce pelvic floor prolapse heaviness symptoms after birth. Don’t do this in pregnancy. The exercise is not a “suck in and up” exercise; it’s a play on selective relaxation and tension. You HAVE to allow your abdominal muscles to soften in order to perform the vacuum. Other diaphragm vacuum benefits include: 1. Improved rib cage mobility 2. Digestive mobilization 3. Lymph circulation 4. Increased CO2 tolerance and expanded breath threshold 5. Cardiovascular support. Diaphragm atrophy is a cause of cardiac disease. 6. Vagus nerve stimulation via mechanical effects eg: parasympathetic nervous system support I use the diaphragm vacuum as a stress diagnostic. BREATHING TECHNIQUE FOR LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE • - Lymphatic drainage is crucial for reducing swelling and inflammation in all your tissues: face, legs and the organs internal to your body, as well as your brain. It’s crucial not just for aesthetic reasons (reducing puffiness of the eyes, etc.), but also for immune surveillance of infections. - Lymphatic drainage is encouraged by low level muscular movement such as when you walk or do sustained cardio; there are also manual lymphatic drainage approaches like lymphatic massage. - Yet one of the most effective ways to encourage lymphatic drainage is through diaphragmatic breathing. - That is because a key reservoir for lymph fluid called the cisterna chyli, which resides in the abdomen, and when you do lymphatic breathing as described in this clip, it creates a pressure difference between the lymphatic vessels leading out of the chyli and the blood supply they feed back into (which are just below your clavicles). In other words, diaphragmatic breathing access as a sort of pump to encourage lymphatic drainage. - So it’s encouraged to do a few rounds of diaphragmatic breathing a few times per day, especially if you’re not getting as much movement as you normally do, in order to encourage lymphatic drainage. 🙌🏼 READ CAPTION 🙌🏼 👇The ONE tip to increase core stability 👇 Breathing is not only necessary for the exchange and perfusion of Oxygen, but plays a important role in the stabilization of the spine. The diaphragm is the PRIMARY muscle of respiration. Second and tertiary muscles include the intercostals, scalene, SCM, and others. The diaphragm is a horizontal muscle that sits at the base of the thorax. When you think of your CORE, think of it as the front (rectus abdominus), sides (obliques), back (multifidus, back of abs and spine), and bottom (pelvic floor). What are we missing?? The top! The diaphragm. As we inhale, the diaphragm drops, increasing our intra abdominal pressure. When this happens, the pressure pushes into the spine and the entire core creating pressure. When the diaphragm has a dysfunctional pattern, we get inhibition of the core musculature. There are many musculoskeletal-skeletal consequences of poor stabilization but those can be fixed with proper diaphragm training. C’est quoi le diaphragme, version “maison” 🏠 Dans le corps, le diaphragme est un grand muscle en forme de dôme qui sépare : En haut : la “pièce” des poumons et du cœur (le thorax) En bas : la “pièce” des organes digestifs (le ventre : estomac, foie, intestins…) Donc, dans cette métaphore, c’est comme : La grande dalle/plancher qui sépare le salon du rez-de-chaussée de l’étage du dessus. Son importance : pourquoi il est crucial 🔧 Le diaphragme est vital . Sans lui, on ne respire plus correctement. 💡Pour la respiration Quand tu respires :🫁 ➡️Inspiration : Le diaphragme descend comme si le plancher s’abaissait un peu. Ça crée plus de place dans la “pièce du haut” (thorax). L’air rentre dans les poumons . ➡️Expiration : Le diaphragme remonte comme si le plancher poussait vers le haut. La place se réduit. L’air ressort des poumons . Donc, dans la maison, c’est comme si le plancher bougeait pour faire entrer et sortir l’air de la maison . Your breathing might be driving more than you think. I see this a lot. When the diaphragm isn’t moving well, the body starts to compensate. Neck tightens. Shoulders lift. The system stays a bit more guarded. In this clip, I check neck movement first and then we focus on our breathing. We place our hands on our ribcage (brings awareness and starts to work with the diaphragm more directly) and take 2-3 deep breathes. Nothing forced. Then we retest. Sometimes that’s enough to create a noticeable change. Give it a try! Turn your head side to side (notice what you feel) Place your hands on your ribs and take a slow breath (2-3 times) Then retest.
