My 582nd Reel: Don’t Buy Where You Can’t Work. In the early 1930s, Harlem, NY (my adopted neighborhood) became the epicenter of a revolutionary campaign for economic justice. Led by Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Sr and other Black organizers, Harlem residents launched boycotts against white-owned businesses that refused to hire Black employees—even though/especially because those same businesses profited from Black consumers. With the simple tag line “Don’t Buy Where You Can’t Work“, these Black activists mobilized churches, unions, neighbors, and youth to demand jobs, justice, and respect. Storefronts were picketed, and flyers were passed. The message was simple: if you won’t hire us, you can’t have our money. The boycott was successful with hundreds of jobs won for Black employees, but also numerous lessons for generations of Black Americans and other historically marginalized people. Harlem taught us that collective action works. BREAKING: 150+ London Councillors and Assembly Members have signed an open letter to London CIV, which manages investments for London councils’ pension funds, calling on it to divest from companies enabling Israel’s genocide and apartheid. The letter states that “ensuring that London CIV’s investments are not contributing to Israel’s genocide, military occupation and apartheid must be an urgent priority” It notes the “groundswell of support” for divestment across London. It calls on London CIV to provide councils with investment options which exclude “all companies enabling Israel’s grave violations of international law”, and for a timeline to be set for divestment from these companies across all London CIV’s funds. We must continue to build campaigns calling on councils to divest their pension funds from Israel’s atrocities. These campaigns are getting results. 32 councils in Britain have now backed divestment. Contact your local PSC branch to get involved
