The Timberwolves have their primary initial advantage-creator, coverage-beater and elite initial offensive machine in Anthony Edwards with no question in doubt about his ability to lead a successful franchise in the future years. However, the current roster construction makes it extremely hard to compete with some of the big squads with such a lack of fluid talent offensively.
Having the initial offensive creator is perfect, but not having surrounded him with players guys who can flourish through what Anthony Edwards’ is elite at is what has challenged the Timberwolves. Anthony Edwards is elite at many things but particularly rim-pressure, drawing a multitude of attention on his penetration and attacking downhill with baked-in advantages. Guys like Jaden McDaniels, Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle in your tarting lineup won’t do it.
Poor court-movers, lack of decision-making and higher-order reads, players that can’t utilise advantage-situations, most particularly Rudy Gobert. The stagnant floor construction only exacerbates these issues. Edwards is a megastar talent, a perennial top-5 player for the years to come level of talent but he isn’t in a spot to succeed by surrounding him with higher-level defensive personnel, the Wolves need to refigure the roster unless you can get sudden blooms from offensive pieces like Donte DiVincenzo, Mike Conley and Naz Reid.
