✨ Did you know Memphis is home to the Equality Trailblazers Suffrage Monument, honoring women who fought for the right to vote? The monument highlights trailblazers like: ⭐️ Ida B. Wells – journalist, anti-lynching activist, and suffragist ⭐️ Mary Church Terrell – champion of racial and gender equality ⭐️ Marion Griffin – first woman lawyer in Tennessee & first woman elected to the state House ⭐️ Lois DeBerry – first female Speaker Pro Tempore in the Tennessee legislature It also honors women whose achievements were made possible by the suffragists’ victory, including civil rights leaders, firsts in local government, and advocates for women’s rights—many of whom aren’t recognized anywhere else. 📍 Located behind the University of Memphis Law School, this monument tells the story of generations of women who shaped our city, our state, and our nation. #WomensHistoryMonth #MemphisHistory #EqualityTrailblazers #WomenWhoLead #BringYourSoul

On Wednesday, Origins:Stories of Home participants visited #HighPointNC to learn about the history of Washington Street and the role the city played in local civil rights. We learned about February 11 and the local sit-ins organized by highschoolers from (then) William Penn High School — a former high school for Black students. High Point University professor Paul Ringel joined us to speak about the significance of the school for the High Point community (today, the school is the Penn-Griffen School of the Arts). Phyllis Bridges from the African American Heritage Tour provided a deep dive into High Point’s civil rights history and the Washington Street Corridor. Rev Frank Thomas shared about Mount Zion Baptist Church. Jakki Davis from D-UP spoke about the organization’s role in supporting the High Point community and Washington Street revitalization. Origins participants appreciated hearing about High Point’s rich history. Local stories matter. #nccj #highpoint #civilrights

Today was an extraordinary day in Statesville. More than 200 community members came together to celebrate the unveiling of our Civil Rights Marker, granted by the NC African American Heritage Commission and placing Statesville on the NC Civil Rights Trail. This landmark represents resilience, courage, and the power of a community willing to preserve and honor its full story. During the invocation, Dr. Deland Myers reminded us: “A landmark that represents resilience, courage and yes faith that has made a difference in this community, in this state and yes in this country… let us remember what we have seen and tell our children and our grandchildren.” Those words capture exactly why today mattered. This marker is more than a sign, it is a commitment. A commitment to remember. To teach. To preserve. And to continue moving forward together. Thank you to every partner, leader, preservationist, and community member who made this possible and to everyone who stood with us today. Statesville’s story matters. And today, we marked it. #StatesvilleNC #CivilRightsTrail #CelebrateProgress #AfricanAmericanHeritage 🎥 @artbysoto
