REDurante a batalha de Iwo Jima, em março de 1945, e de Okinawa, em maio do mesmo ano, a jovem aspirante Jane Louise "Candy" Kendeigh, de 22 anos, tornou-se a primeira enfermeira de voo da Marinha a chegar a essas ilhas para cuidar dos feridos. Kendeigh foi uma das 122 mulheres selecionadas em 1944 para receber treinamento especializado, que as ensinou não apenas a reconhecer e tratar ferimentos de guerra, mas também a lutar em combate corpo a corpo, se necessário, e a se preparar para o caso de suas aeronaves precisarem amerissar no oceano.
Após se graduarem no programa no início de 1945, a maioria das 24 enfermeiras que o concluíram com sucesso foi designada para um esquadrão de evacuação médica do Serviço de Transporte Aéreo da Marinha, o VRE-1. Este esquadrão foi enviado para Guam em antecipação à campanha de Iwo Jima e desempenharia um papel importante, evacuando com sucesso 2.293 militares em Iwo Jima pouco depois de terem sido feridos, e repetindo o feito em Okinawa. O primeiro voo da Alferes Kendeigh para Iwo Jima foi documentado por um membro do CDR.
Unidade Fotográfica da Aviação Naval de Edward Steichen, sob o comando do Tenente (júnior) Gill DeWitt. O Tenente DeWitt tirou muitas fotos durante cada etapa da viagem e, posteriormente, para documentar a experiência, organizou as fotos em um álbum de recortes, adicionando comentários manuscritos a muitas delas. Jane L. Kendeigh Cheverton faleceu em 1987, oito anos após Gill DeWitt. O álbum de recortes que ele compilou para documentar a experiência que compartilharam naquele voo de ida e volta a Iwo Jima foi doado aos arquivos do Museu Nacional da Guerra do Pacífico. Pouco tempo depois, este notável documento foi fotografado e transformado em um livreto, publicado e vendido pela Fundação Almirante Nimitz.
Graças a Jane e Gill, juntamente com o Museu Nacional da Guerra do Pacífico, o trabalho vital realizado pelas enfermeiras de voo da Marinha jamais será esquecido.

extraordinary picture taken in 1948 by David ‘Chim’ Seymour, one of Magnum Photos’ co-founders, has since been seen by millions: first, it was published in LIFE magazine where the caption read in part “Children’s wounds are not all outward. Those made in the mind by years of sorrow will take years to heal.” Then it was selected by Edward Steichen for his legendary exhibition The Family of Man. This image of Tereska drawing her home has fascinated many and has become emblematic of World War II.

EMConstantin Brâncuși (February 19, 1876 – March 16, 1957) “was a Romanian sculptor, painter, and photographer who made his career in France.
Considered one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century and a pioneer of modernism, Brâncuși is called the patriarch of modern sculpture.
As a child, he displayed an aptitude for carving wooden farm tools. Formal studies took him first to Bucharest, then to Munich, then to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1905 to 1907.
His art emphasizes clean geometrical lines that balance forms inherent in his materials with the symbolic allusions of representational art. Brâncuși sought inspiration in non-European cultures as a source of primitive exoticism, as did Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, and others.However, other influences emerge from Romanian folk art traceable through Byzantine and Dionysian traditions” (wikipedia)
