DEWhen FSSAI increased the pesticide residue limit (MRL) in spices and culinary herbs, scientists and food safety experts strongly objected, warning that it could compromise public health.
Now the concern looks real.
Independent testing by Trustified of Maggi masala has detected multiple pesticides in quantities that would not be allowed in Europe.
In India, this is legal today because in 2024 the MRL was increased 10 times — from 0.01 mg/kg to 0.1 mg/kg. Companies simply follow the law of the country they sell in, which is why the same product can be very different abroad.

Sellers operating without an FSSAI licence can face penalties under food safety laws, including fines up to ₹5 lakh and possible legal action. Farmers who supply milk to dairy cooperatives or large brands like Amul generally do not need a separate licence because the milk is already tested and regulated within those systems. The government wants milk sellers to come under official records so authorities can monitor quality, conduct inspections, and ensure safe milk for consumers.
