A tiny lion cub in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. Judging by its milky eyes, this precious little thing is just 7-10 days old. Our guide Adrian from @wingman_films_africa used his unbelievable fieldcraft abilities to detect this lion den in a thick area of bushes. With just a day left of our shoot, Adrian said we could try waiting at a distance to see if the cubs would come out into view (we’d only heard them at this point). Given the thickness of the bushes and their very young age, it was a long shot at best. He’d previously spent 3 weeks near a den like this and only seen the cubs a handful of times. Mother nature was on our side however and an hour into the wait, this little one came stumbling out into view. There are less than 20,000 lions left in Africa so every very cub counts. Fortunately there are organisations like @zcp_zambia doing incredible work to make sure lions have a future. Filmed for my new show coming later this year to @disneyplus #EpicAdventuresWithBertieGregory

Field Notes: Photographing the Red-legged Honeycreeper This species is fast, flock-oriented, and light-sensitive — which means preparation matters more than luck. Timing First 60–90 minutes after sunrise in Costa Rica. They drop lower to feed before thermals and canopy glare become a problem. Positioning Work fruiting trees at forest edge. Set up slightly below perch level when possible — eye-line alignment makes the blue pop and keeps the red legs visible. Exposure Strategy Blues clip easily. • Shoot manual • Slight negative exposure compensation (-1/3 to -2/3) • Protect highlights first, recover shadows later • Watch the histogram, not the LCD Settings Starting Point 1/2000–1/3200 sec f/5.6–f/7.1 Auto ISO (capped based on your body’s tolerance) Continuous AF + small tracking zone Behavior Tip They rarely sit long. Pre-focus on the perch. Anticipate the hop after fruit grab — that micro-pause is your moment. This isn’t a feeder bird. This is field-earned color. When everything aligns — light, angle, behavior — the frame becomes electric.
