NABayard Rustin was an organizing icon. ✨
In 1964, only 1 year after the March on Washington, he organized the “Freedom Day” protest – an event in which ~500k students & teachers walked out to boycott school segregation and the inhumane conditions of NYC Public Schools.
A prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, he also led the “First Freedom Ride” in 1947, and was instrumental in the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture @nmaahc says that “On June 19, 1865, nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom.
