JOWhat a beautiful day in Acres Homes at the 17th Annual Family Day in the Park at Sylvester Turner Park — a park named after the man who loved his community with his whole heart.
Although this was the first Family Day without Congressman Sylvester Turner, who proudly represented Congressional District 18, his spirit was everywhere. From the turkey legs to the snow cones, the Zydeco music to the baseball games, the whole event reminded us of his lasting legacy of love, safety, and community.
It was extra special for me — I once represented this area on Houston City Council, and it felt like coming home.
Shout out to Ashley Turner Captain for continuing her father’s legacy and making sure this space remains vibrant, free, and full of joy for families in the 4-4!
Acres Homes owes me nothing. I’ll be back next year.
And when the DJ played Kendrick Lamar’s “They Not Like Us” as I walked on stage — it hit deep. Because those coming after communities like Acres Homes, Third Ward, and Independence Heights really are not like us. But I’m here, standing in the gap, fighting for us. That’s what I’ve always done, and I always will. Representing and protecting neighborhoods like this will always be personal to me.
I pulled up to the park all by myself — no entourage, no staff. But so many people came up asking to take pictures with me, and I was honored. I told them, “If y’all want a picture with me, I want one with y’all too!” That’s how these photos happened. The love was real. It made me smile deep inside and reminded me that people see you and appreciate you — even years later. If I ever forgot, I was reminded today — and for that, I’m thankful.
Thank you, Congressman Turner for all you’ve done for the City of Houston and especially Acres Homes! I salute you!

NOWhat an incredible year we spent together, fam. We reunited with old friends at the @hollywoodbowl for our 10th birthday party, raced through the dessert for Southwest Collision Course, basked in so many beautiful sunrises, did a week-long summer camp, went roller skating and picnicking and bar-hopping, worked out with pumpkins on the sand at Santa Monica, and so so SO much more.
We can’t wait for all the fun that 2025 will bring. See you then!
