I wish I could share a beautiful, bountiful garden like I see so often on instagram but this is my reality 🥴 this year has probably been my worst garden yet. Ok I have been getting some produce, and some things are doing really well (like my variety of berries), but most plants have been a complete flop. I’m pretty sure it’s because I haven’t been paying enough attention to the soil. I like to garden in winter by growing cold-hardy crops under hoops with frost cloth or farm-grade plastic to cover them. I have gardened successfully in ice and snow this way… and while I’m in zone 7b where it is easier, I know people in zone 5 who also successfully winter garden this way! Unfortunately, I had a series of events that caused me to lose 2 of my 5 winter beds. My biggest broccoli bed (thankfully I have a few more broccoli growing in another bed), and my bok choy bed. Typically my taller hoop covers do just fine in my zone, but in the unusual weather we had the last few weeks of December, plus having family visiting over Christmas, I neglected to pay closer attention to my beds. I typically secure the plastic with clamps AND heavy rocks. I didn’t do that this time. Plus on hot days you should pull the plastic back enough to vent it. Didn’t do that either… by the time I realized, it was too late. 😥 If I had added a layer of lightweight frost cloth on top of the broccoli, plus the tall hoops and plastic like normal, and tucked everything in well and secured, they would have survived through the freeze. But that’s okay, things happen. In the meantime I’m grateful for the lettuce, carrots, spinach, kale, cabbage, herbs, and some broccoli still doing well! #gardening #wintergardening #wintergarden #gardenfail #gardensuccess #gardenchallenges #raisedbedgarden #zone7b #growyourownfood #vegetablegarden
