Key Historical Periods Ancient Period: Canaanites populated the region in the early Bronze Age. Hebrew tribes arrived around 1200 BCE, with the Kingdom of Israel emerging around 1000 BCE. The area fell under Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, and Greek control before the Romans conquered it in 63 BCE. Roman/Byzantine Period: Following Jewish revolts, the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in 70 CE. In 132 CE, the Romans renamed the region Palestine. In the 4th century, it became a center for Christianity.
