Picture this: you’re in a meeting, and you need help with a task. You ask, “I need someone to help me pull the report together. Does anyone have the capacity?” Silence… People avert their gaze… No one responds. Has this ever happened to you when in a group setting? This frustrating situation is a prime example of the ‘Bystander Effect’ — a psychological phenomenon where individuals are less likely to offer help when there are others present. In this scenario, responsibility is diffused among the attendees, causing the plea for assistance to go unanswered and leaving the person in need feeling unsupported. And this applies in professional setting, social setting and even personal relationships. So what can you do? Rather than asking a group for help, go to individual directly. When you ask someone specific for assistance, they are more likely to feel personally responsible and invested in the task at hand. (PS – It’s worth noting that studies have also found that various other factors influence the likelihood of people offering to help, including whether it’s an emergency, the relationship dynamics and perceived expertise.)
