REDe Harlem Shake is een virale internetmeme en danshype uit begin 2013, gebaseerd op het nummer “Harlem Shake” van Baauer. De korte video’s, meestal ongeveer dertig seconden lang, volgen een vast patroon. In het eerste deel danst één persoon, vaak met een helm of masker op, terwijl de mensen om hem heen hun normale bezigheden blijven doen, bijvoorbeeld in een kantoor, klaslokaal of andere alledaagse omgeving.
Wanneer in het nummer de zin “Do the Harlem Shake” klinkt, volgt een plotselinge overgang, ook wel de “drop” genoemd. Op dat moment verandert de scène abrupt: via een snelle montage is de ruimte ineens gevuld met mensen die verkleed zijn en op een chaotische, ongecoördineerde manier dansen.
