JAYou’re in labor.
You’re managing.
Things are moving.
And then your OB says… “Let’s check your cervix and see how far along you are.”
It’s one of the most common things offered in labor, and doctors often suggest it in a way that makes it feel like you can’t say no.
But just because it’s common doesn’t mean you have to agree.
Cervical checks may seem routine, but they’re still an intervention….and often an unnecessary one.
So how do you know if this check is truly needed right now?
😮💨 Take a deep breath and ask your OB respectfully:
✨ “What’s the reason for checking now?”
✨ “What changes if we wait?”
✨ “What happens if I’m only a few centimeters?”
✨ “Are there risks if my water has already broken?”
That last one is important, because here’s the truth…
Cervical checks carry risks, including infection, discomfort, and in rare cases rupturing the membranes before your body is ready.
And after all that risk, they don’t actually do what most women think.
❌ They can’t predict how long your labor will take.
✅ They only tell you where your cervix is in that exact moment.
You could go from 4 to 5 cm in 10 minutes, or sit at 5 to 6 cm for hours. All it really does is keep you on pins and needles unnecessarily.
For many women, frequent checks feel invasive and discouraging. The stress of “not progressing” can create tension in your body that stalls labor. Sometimes opting out and letting your body work undisturbed is the very thing that helps labor move forward.
But if you still want one after weighing the pros and cons, that’s your choice too.
Your birth. Your body. Your decision.
