لِقرون طويلة، تم تجاهل النساء اللواتي شاركن في صناعة العلم، خاصة في سياق التاريخ الإسلامي. لكن العصر الذهبي للحضارة الإسلامية لم يُبنَ على أيدي الرجال فقط.
في سلسلة محاضرات كلية داروين، جامعة كامبريدج، عادت إلى الواجهة قصة مريم الأسطرلابي صانعة الأسطرلابات من حلب في القرن العاشر، التي ساعدت أدواتها الفلكيين على تحديد الوقت والاتجاه وحتى تواريخ رمضان.
قصة مريم تُثبت أن النساء في العصر الذهبي الإسلامي كنّ رائدات في العلوم والمعرفة، جزءًا من حركة فكرية متكاملة، لا استثناءً نادرًا.

Mariam al-Astrulabi: Forgotten by history, remembered forever...
For centuries, the narrative of science has often overlooked the women who helped shape it, especially in the context of Islamic history. Yet, the Golden Age of the Muslim world was not built by men alone.
At Cambridge University’s Darwin College Lecture Series, Sandi Toksvig reminded the world of Mariam al-Astrulabi (al-‘Ijliyyah), the 10th-century Syrian maker of astrolabes whose precision instruments guided astronomers in measuring time, navigation, and even the dates of Ramadan.
Her story stands as living proof that women in the Islamic Golden Age were active contributors to science, technology, and knowledge — not exceptions, but part of a long and sophisticated tradition of scholarship.
