HOY’all…Florida is a beast.
Yeah yeah..no snow. But summers here can be brutal and humidity is like walking around with a wet blanket.
Things in other states just don’t work here or they work differently!
Key things about homesteading in Florida (from a native Floridian who has been doing this for a decade):
1) Water is key. Most likely you have sandy soil which means water will seep right through. Highly recommend drip irrigation especially on fruit trees!! ALWAYS make sure your animals have plenty of water too!!
2) Think about the heat when it comes to your animals. Depending on which part of Florida you’re in, it only gets down to freezing a few times a year (if you’re below the frost line, hardly ever). Plenty of shade. Plenty of ventilation in barns and animal coops. Plenty of water. You can always cover things up tighter for those few freezing nights. But the heat is brutal and will be dealt with way more than cold.
3) Forget gardening in August. It’s too hot. The sun is too intense. Use this time to prep beds for next season or just take a break.
4) During dog days of summer, do all outside work in morning and late evening. Trust me. You DO NOT want to be outside midday which is the worst of all. If you have to be, water is your friend as well as electrolytes!!
