Hear from Maddy Kish, BFA ‘24, Haley Levin, BFA ‘24, and Rachel Park, BFA ‘24, as they talk about their sculptural installations on display in Flynn Park and Lewis Park as part of the 2024 University City Public Art Series.⁠ ⁠ Rachel Park’s project, “Wishes for the Dream,” is inspired by the custom of wishing on a coin and tossing it into a pond. Weaving in the American Dream, generational storytelling, Korean heritage, and the immigrants of University City, Park’s sculpture features more than a dozen large-scale coins floating on the pond in Lewis Park.⁠ ⁠ Maddy Kish and Haley Levin worked together on their piece, “Living Drawings,” in Flynn Park. They led a second grade class at Flynn Park Elementary School in an exercise about nature, observation, and drawing. Students created drawings of animals, then voted on three favorites from their class. From there, Kish and Levin built eight-foot-tall wooden sculptures, bringing the drawings to life.⁠ The work was created in the course Public Art: Production and Installation with @arnynadler. @universitycitymo @rachelparkart @maddykish @haleysplat @samfox_engage #washu24 #samfoxschool⁠ #InSTLforSTL

Together they are working with a local non-profit, Art Place Initiative, whose goal is to provide wealth and equity for local artists through home ownership. This project will transform areas of the historic Gravois Park Neighborhood into artist housing and green spaces. Two new spaces — one physical, the other virtual — will help WashU make good on its commitment to be “In St. Louis, For St. Louis.” 🏢 Located in Delmar Divine, the WashU Community Engagement Office will make classrooms, drop-in spaces, and conference rooms available to WashU’s staff and faculty for their everyday work in the community. It will also house the Center for Community Health Partnerships and Research and the Office of the Provost’s new St. Louis Confluence Collaborative for Community-Engaged Research, Teaching and Practice. 💻 The new “In St. Louis, For St. Louis” website, stlouis.wustl.edu, is a virtual nexus for the community to access information on programs, events, resources and opportunities to engage and partner with the university. The university also is launching a regional engagement campaign to highlight these efforts. #WashU #WashUalumni #InSTLForSTL
