PAThe Bag on the Belt
The industrial hum of the recycling facility in Chicago was deafening, a sound Yamato had grown used to over the last three years. It was 6:00 AM, and the air already smelled of stale coffee and cold refuse.
Yamato stood at his station along the primary conveyor belt, his gloved hands moving rhythmically. His job was to spot non-recyclables before they reached the massive industrial shredder at the end of the line—a metal beast that chewed through everything with terrifying efficiency.
Cardboard. Keep. Glass. Keep. Styrofoam. Toss.
He was in a trance until a large, heavy-duty black plastic bag came rolling down the line. It looked different from the usual household trash. Just as Yamato reached out to toss it into the reject bin, he froze.
The bag didn't just slide; it jerked.
Yamato blinked, thinking the vibration of the machine was playing tricks on his tired eyes. But then, the bag wriggled again, violently this time, rolling closer to the mouth of the shredder. The massive steel teeth were only ten feet away, grinding loudly.
"Stop! Shut it down!" Yamato screamed, but his voice was swallowed by the roar of the machinery.
He didn't wait. Disregarding protocol, Yamato lunged over the safety rail. His chest slammed against the metal guard, but he stretched his arm out as far as it would go. The black bag was inches from tipping over the edge into the crushing blades.
With a desperate grunt, Yamato’s fingers snagged the knotted plastic. He yanked it back with all his strength, falling backward onto the metal walkway, clutching the bag against his chest.
He could feel warmth radiating from inside. Something was whimpering.
His heart pounding in his ears, Yamato tore open the plastic knot. The thick smell of the garbage dump faded instantly as two pairs of terrified, dark eyes looked up at him.
Inside were two tiny puppies, likely no more than six weeks old, huddled together in the darkness. They were shaking violently, letting out high-pitched cries now that the roar of the machine wasn't muffling them.
"Hey there... you're okay," Yamato whispered, his voice trembling as much as the puppies were. He pulled off his thick work gloves

CO😰😰😰 my poor client came across this when she unzipped her dress bag the morning of her wedding.
We were getting her ready in a very cute cabin in Squamish, BC, but unfortunately there was a discreet baseboard heater at the bottom of the hooks where it was hung. Well…the baseboard heat went right through that garment bag and right onto the wedding dress 🔥🫣
