What an honor it is to be hosting this year’s 8th Annual Spiritual Herbalism Conference, Ancestral Intelligence (A.I.): A Future of Remembering is here. This year’s keynote circle gathers artists, healers, and culture keepers to help us remember forward—where plant wisdom, embodied history, and Indigenous knowledge meet. But it is an honor to share a message from one of our keynote speakers, Mama G, who hails from Jamaica and whom I’ve had the honor of spending time with. From the moment we met I knew we’d walk this path together🤍 For those unfamiliar with Mama G, she is recognized by Maroon communities of Suriname as the founder of the Maroon Indigenous Women’s Circle. A well sought-after inspirational and motivational speaker who has graced many platforms of higher learning institutions locally and worldwide, Gaa mang Gloria Simms seeks to place Africa’s Indigenous knowledge as the base/root of all other knowledge systems. She is guided and enriched by the motto, “What life experiences have taught unto me, I will teach to those who want to learn.” Mama G and I will be hosting the first-ever Pre-BHC ceremony, and I look forward to not only sharing the keynote stage with her but holding space as we call in the energy of our ancestors to hold us during conference weekend.

🚨 News flash: regenerative agriculture isn't a brand new concept! Agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, intercropping... these practices have existed long before their modern titles. Indigenous peoples around the world have used these techniques for centuries, honoring the land by working with it to nourish ecosystems (and people) for generations. So, let's give credit where it's due. By embracing and celebrating Indigenous knowledge, we can transform conventional farming into farming that helps heal the planet. 🌎 #RainforestAlliance #RegenerativeAgriculture #IndigenousPeoples

Once, when she flew over Gombe, Dr. Jane saw how bare the land was. She saw that people had been "cutting down trees to survive, to make some money from charcoal or timber, to make land to grow more food." And she knew that was not sustainable. "If we can't help them find ways of making a living without destroying their environment, we can't save chimpanzees, forests, or anything else." That was when she and the Jane Goodall Institute, together with seven local Tanzanians, created Tacare – our community-led conservation approach. Tacare integrates Indigenous knowledge, scientific data, and innovative technologies with locally-owned decision-making processes and solutions. This approach recognizes that, without input and leadership from local community members, and without tackling problems holistically, conservation initiatives cannot succeed. To this day, our team uses this approach. Both here at home and around the world, the Jane Goodall Institute partners with communities to restore forests, create sustainable livelihoods, protect critical habitat, and much more. And as Dr. Jane said, this has been very successful: "People have come to understand saving the environment isn't just for wildlife – it's for our own future! So they've become our partners in conservation." To support this kind of work, and to make sure Dr. Jane's community-led conservation initiatives can continue, you can donate to the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada at JaneGoodall.ca. Traditional water systems rely on indigenous knowledge and locally available materials to collect, store, and distribute water sustainably. Examples include hand-dug wells, clay pots for water storage, rainwater harvesting with calabashes, gravity-fed channels, and communal ponds. These systems are low-cost, energy-free, and environmentally friendly, especially in rural communities. They promote water conservation, community participation, and resilience in areas with limited access to modern infrastructure. #TraditionalWaterSystem #IndigenousTechnology #WaterHarvesting #HandDugWells #RainwaterCollection ClayPotStorage GravityFedSystem RuralWaterSupply SustainableWater LowCostTechnology EcoFriendlySolutions CommunityWater LocalMaterials WaterConservation AncientEngineering RuralDevelopment SustainableLivin

🐟 Last week, Pacific Wild joined First Nations and conservation groups including the Herring Conservation and Restoration Society, @conservancyhornbyisland, the Association for Denman Island Marine Stewards, and the Saanich Inlet Protection Society in Vancouver to meet with DFO. There we advocated for an immediate temporary moratorium on commercial herring fishing in the Salish Sea. Hereditary Chief Eric Pelkey of the Tsawout W̱SÁNEĆ Nation shared how herring were once central to his community’s food, trade, and traditions. But now, in many areas, they haven’t spawned in 25 years. Dr. David Suzuki stressed that local populations of herring are irreplaceable due to their loyalty to specific spawning grounds, meaning overfishing in one area cannot be offset by populations elsewhere. Pacific Wild joins with First Nations, conservation groups and communities across the Salish Sea to call for recognition of Indigenous knowledge alongside scientific studies, and for urgent action to protect and restore this critical foundation species before it’s too late. 🎥 by @iantmcallister & @larsisaac #ProtectPacificHerring #BIGlittlefish #PacificHerring #SustainableFisheries #ForageFish #SalishSea #StraitofGeorgia #BritishColumbia

From the banks of the Brahmaputra to the heart of Jharkhand, @thatslumgirl's story reminds us that climate action doesn’t always begin in conference rooms or policy papers; it begins with people. In her winning entry video, Renu speaks about growing up in one of Jharkhand’s largest slums, finding her way into social work, and slowly realising that justice for people cannot exist without justice for the planet. Her journey led her to Assam, where she lived alongside the Miri tribe and witnessed how communities that contribute the least to climate change bear its harshest impacts. What makes Renu’s entry stand out is the clarity of her vision and the strength of her idea. Instead of framing communities as helpless victims, she centres them as climate warriors, people restoring eroded river islands, planting native species, and reviving entire ecosystems through indigenous knowledge and collective care. Through thoughtful documentation and powerful storytelling, Renu positions herself not as the hero, but as a medium—amplifying lived experiences, resilience, and solutions rooted in community. As part of the #BornGenerous Storytellers Contest by @givingtuesdayindia , the #DhartiSeDosti category celebrates climate generosity in all its forms—quiet, creative, and courageous. Today, we’re proud to feature Renu as the winner whose story shows us that the answers to the climate crisis already exist, if we’re willing to listen. @wara.iris77 is #TogetherForNature 🌿 Born in the mountains of La Paz and shaped by her Aymara identity, Wara grew up with a deep understanding that caring for nature is part of who you are. Her journeys through Pando and the Bolivian Amazon have shown her both the resilience of these landscapes and the pressures they now face as forests thin and rivers change. Wara carries her community’s teachings forward – supporting local forest protection, sharing Indigenous knowledge, and raising her voice alongside youth and Indigenous leaders at COP30. Her story underscores how this movement builds through the actions and commitments of many. “When many voices come together, we can heal the Earth.” Will you stand with Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant leaders, and local communities leading solutions on the ground?

Simard, one of the boundary-pushing scientists of our time, is also a resplendent storyteller. Through her, new threads of connection between Indigenous knowledge and Western science are formed. The experiments and ideas in When the Forest Breathes are quietly revolutionary.
