So if you’ve been wondering what a realistic nap routine looks like for a 3-month-old, I’ve got you, mama! This is what I suggest to the families I work with, and what worked well for Quinn when she was 3 months old, and I hope it brings you some clarity too! At this age, babies usually do best with about 1.5 hours of awake time between naps to avoid overtiredness (and all the struggles that come with it). If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a gentle sample nap schedule you can try: ☀️ 7:00 AM: Wake up 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM: Nap #1 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM: Nap #2 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM: Nap #3 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM: Nap #4 🌙 7:30 PM: Bedtime ✨Just a reminder: Every baby is different. Some days might feel like a dream, others like a total mess—and that’s normal! The goal is progress, not perfection. Snuggle your baby, aim for those wake windows, and most importantly—give yourself grace. Your baby seems tired, grizzly and unhappy, but somehow they just won't sleep... It might be because they’re overtired already.  When babies get overtired, their bodies go into fight or flight mode, making it even harder to settle. Here are 5 signs your baby might be past tired and in need of sleep soon: 1. Rubbing eyes A common sign that your baby’s body is showing it’s time to rest 2. Needing extra comfort with feeding They may suddenly want to feed more often and resist being put down. It’s not just hunger, it’s their way of seeking comfort 3. Crying inconsolably Not just fussy, this is intense, hard-to-soothe crying that seems to come out of nowhere. A big sign their nervous system is overstimulated. 4. Pulling at ears This one can be easy to miss or misread. It can be a subtle way babies signal discomfort or being tired, especially when they’re past their ideal wake window. 5. Arching their back A physical cue that they’re overstimulated and uncomfortable, often showing up when trying to settle for sleep or during feeds, one that parents can mistake for reflux. Once your baby hits 3 months old, their sleep is shifting in a big way — and that means bedtime starts to matter more than ever. Around this age, their circadian rhythm becomes more organized, and their sleep cycles begin maturing. This natural shift makes it easier for them to fall asleep for the night around 7pm. What’s really interesting is that we actually see circadian rhythms begin developing even earlier than this. In the newborn stage, babies start showing signs of day–night organization as they consolidate longer stretches overnight. But by about 3 months, this rhythm becomes strong enough that bedtime timing really starts to impact sleep quality. In the early evening, your baby’s body begins producing melatonin — the sleepy hormone that helps them relax and settle. When bedtime gets pushed too late, instead of getting sleepier, their body releases cortisol, the alert “stress hormone” that makes them wired, restless, and unable to settle. When that happens, you’ll often notice: ✨ Frequent night wakings ✨ Short or broken nighttime sleep ✨ Early morning wake-ups ✨ Difficulty settling or connecting sleep cycles Getting bedtime right around this stage makes such a difference in helping your baby sleep longer and more restoratively.
