FAResearchers at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) have created FiloBot, a robot that simulates climbing plant behavior by responding to light and gravity. This innovative project, led by Barbara Mazzolai, is the result of a decade of research focused on using additive manufacturing (3D printing) to replicate the growth patterns of climbing plants. Mazzolai notes that climbing plants adapt to their environments by growing against gravity and utilizing supports for light access, a strategy that FiloBot mimics through the use of tendrils and twining.
FiloBot is designed to navigate complex, unstructured environments and cross voids, providing advantages over traditional wheeled or legged robots. Its applications may include search and rescue missions and environmental monitoring. The robot features a head with light and gravity sensors, while a small 3D printer at its base extrudes thermoplastic filament to form its body. This circular filament builds a stem-like structure, anchored to a power supply and other components. By varying the filament application speed, FiloBot can bend and autonomously select an appropriate angle in response to environmental stimuli, adjusting its configuration accordingly.
