How It Works The device uses hundreds of tiny, sharp steel "spines" that act like miniature fishhooks. As the gripper is pressed against a rock: Independence: Each spine moves independently on its own suspension system. Engagement: The spines slide along the surface until they catch on a microscopic pit or protrusion. Load Sharing: Because there are so many spines working together, the weight of the rock (like the 9 kg and 13 kg rocks shown) is distributed, allowing for a remarkably strong hold on irregular surfaces. This technology is a game-changer for missions involving asteroid sampling or climbing vertical rock faces on Mars, where gravity is low or the terrain is unpredictable.
