WIWhen you’re out sea kayaking, water inside your cockpit is almost inevitable. Waves splash in, rain falls, or sometimes water just sneaks in when you’re re-entering your kayak. Knowing when and why to pump that water out is essential for safety, comfort, and control on the water.
Why pump water out?
Even a small amount of water inside your kayak can make it heavier and less stable. This extra weight shifts your center of gravity and can make paddling more tiring. Sitting in water for extended periods can also lower your body temperature, increasing the risk of hypothermia—especially in cold or windy conditions.
When should you pump?
It’s best to start pumping water out as soon as you notice your kayak is feeling heavier, sluggish, or if you can hear water sloshing around inside the cockpit. Don’t wait until the water’s pooling up; a few scoops early on will keep your kayak lighter and easier to handle.
How to use the pump:
Most sea kayakers carry a small hand pump designed specifically for cockpit draining. To use it effectively, place the end of the hose or pump nozzle into the water inside your cockpit. Then, pump steadily and consistently, pushing the water out through the discharge hose or nozzle. It’s important to keep the pump properly sealed and maintain a rhythm so you’re moving water efficiently. Some pumps have a one-way valve to prevent water from flowing back in, which makes the process smoother.
Also, remember to secure your pump where you can easily reach it — in rough conditions, time is critical, and fumbling around for gear can be dangerous.
