ROReleased in 1969 and reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Whole Lotta Love” became Led Zeppelin’s first gold record. While Robert Plant’s vocals are iconic, this 1973 live energy shows why John Bonham’s “heavy” swing was the engine. His use of a 26-inch bass drum provided a low-frequency punch that measured significantly louder than his contemporaries, essentially blueprinting the sound of modern hard rock. By the time this was filmed in 1973, Led Zeppelin was breaking box office records previously held by The Beatles. “Whole Lotta Love” is famous for its experimental middle section, but the foundation is Bonham’s drumming..often cited by researchers as some of the most sampled percussion in music history.
