Meet the Manta Ray—basically the ballet dancer of the sea. With wingspans reaching up to 23 FEET (that's wider than a car!), they glide through water like they're flying through the sky. ✈️💙
But here's the mind-blowing part: they have the LARGEST brain of any fish. These gentle giants are smart enough to recognize themselves in mirrors—something only a handful of animals can do! 🪞🧠
Oh, and those horn-looking things on their head? Those are cephalic lobes—they help funnel plankton into their mouth. Basically, nature's salad shooters. 🥗🌿
They also love getting cleaned by little fish at "cleaning stations" like an underwater spa day. Even manta rays need self-care! 💆♀️🐟

Manta rays are filter-feeders and swim slowly with their mouths wide open to capture zooplankton in the water column. As they glide through the water, their enormous mouths act like giant filters, sifting through vast quantities of seawater to extract zooplankton. This mesmerizing behavior allows them to efficiently feed on the abundant microscopic life present in the ocean, sustaining their energy needs and supporting their impressive size.

ROToday was one of those days where the ocean gifted me something I wouldn’t have imagined.
A beautiful manta ray, only a meter in length, still with wrinkles and its wings pointing up, surprised us on @heronisland
I‘m no professional and I’m awaiting confirmation from @projectmanta but I suspect this could be a very young manta ray, maybe weeks to months old. This was a really exciting find and the smallest manta I’ve ever seen. It was incredibly curious and gentle.
The spots on its bellies are unique and by capturing a clear shot of its belly I’m able to submit this information and photos to @projectmanta and they’ll be able to ID it. If it’s not already been IDed, then I’m able to name it.
What do you think we should name it?

Love is in the water, quite literally 💙
It may look like play, but this is actually how Manta rays court. It all begins with one female manta ray leading a line of hopeful males in a graceful, high-energy dance. One by one, the males fall into line behind her, moving in perfect formation and following her lead.
Together they perform an incredible acrobatic display around the Reef following her every twist and turn, even if it means going in circles.
Eventually, most of the males drop out, exhausted. The last one left? He wins her over.

SEDo you know why the giant manta ray flips through the ocean? In the new episode of A Sea of Hope, premiering this Friday, May 26th, @mitty captures these free-flying acrobats soaring through the sea. They’re not just greeting her with a show; there’s a biological explanation for their theatrics.
As frequent filter feeders, the giant manta swims with their mouths open, sucking in krill and zooplankton. They spread their frontal cephalic fins to funnel the food into their mouths. Once they find a food-packed area, they somersault to circle back to that area and catch as much prey as possible. Masters of physics – if feeding with a friend, the two mantas will chase each other in a circle, trapping their food in a cyclone.
