INMark Rothko, the renowned artist born as Marcus Rotkovich in 1903, embraced the profound emotional potential of color in his iconic paintings. His mastery lay in the interplay of colors, shapes, and backgrounds, evoking varied moods through soft brushwork around color fields and sharp lines within central forms.
Drawing from ancient, medieval, and Renaissance art, Rothko created enigmatic yet powerful works, often described as “facades” revealing hints of emotion rather than explicit narratives. Gradually evolving towards abstraction, his signature style of color juxtapositions—like deep blues against purples or bright reds against browns—elicited disparate emotional responses, marking Rothko as a seminal figure in 20th-century art.

HIWell my dear friends these are indeed huge red paintings but they are the subjects of one of the biggest art statement ever made.
Mark Rothko was supposed to give these painting to the four seasons restaurant in New York when he ended up changing his mind (returning the money after working on those for 2 years) because he believed that his pieces should be accessible to everyone and not just privatized for people paying hundreds of dollars for a luxury meal... so he donated them to the Tate.
Just for that he deserves 818161 posts 😂

MARothko wanted to raise painting to the level of poignancy of music and poetry and he succeeded beyond words.
To say that this show is spectacular is an understatement. 115 paintings on loan from museums and private collections that have never been shown together before in such a comprehensive way.

SFEven art needs a little pick-me-up sometimes! Watch as our conservator, Jennifer Hickey, gives Mark Rothko’s “No. 14” (1960) a retouch.
#FunFact “No. 14” has only left our galleries twice since entering our collection in 1997, once in 2013 and more recently for an exhibition at @foundationlv. Upon the Rothko’s return, our conservation team jumped on this rare opportunity to bring it to their studio for maintenance. The last time it was conserved this comprehensively was in 1998!
This visitor favorite will be back in our galleries on Thursday, June 6. Check back soon for a behind-the-scenes look at how this painting traveled from Paris back to our museum.

Many of Rothko’s paintings on paper from this period sold quickly to private collectors and are seldom seen publicly. This work, however, was exhibited twice before it was sold by Rothko’s dealer, Sidney Janis: once at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, New York, and again at Janis’s gallery in New York City. In both instances, as now, the painting was called Grays in Yellow, a title assigned by Janis rather than the artist. Rothko abandoned descriptive titles around 1947, preferring that viewers encounter his works without any guidance or distraction.
