the carer pass system for megacon is so strange. animecon doesn't require any proof, you just have to ask for a carer pass. hyperjapan requires proof of disability on the day. mcm requires proof of disability in advance. these are all reasonable. but megacon requires proof of carer - not proof of disability. in other words, you have to have a specific symbol on your access card, or a written statement in your PIP claim etc, stating you specifically need a carer, or proof of yourself receiving carer's allowance. on the surface this seems to make sense, afterall it is a 'carer' pass. but that's until you realise how ableist it really is. many people have disabilities that don't, on paper, require a carer. but having a carer can mean having someone push your wheelchair, hold your bags, monitor you if you're dizzy, calm you down during panic attacks, contact your family if needed. there are so many types of carers and the vast majority of them are not registered legally.
my biggest qualm - i emailed megacon asking how to get a carer pass. they replied within a few hours. when i followed up pointing out the issues in their system and that this would mean i wouldn't be able to be my friend's carer (when i am able to be at every other con), THEY DIDN'T REPLY. they completely ignored me pointing out their issues. they took no responsibility, made no effort to apologise or correct.
i've always loved megacon, but with the amount of issues i've had this weekend, honestly this was the worst megacon i've been to.
