SHI shared this video some days ago on my story, and the number of messages I received has prompted me to reshare this.
This is easily the most precise depiction of an inexplicable emotion a lot of people go through in a traumatic relationship. A lot of people have experienced something like this, it may vary in potency: from mild to moderate to severe. And every piece of advice that came from loved ones to self-preserve almost seemed like an overreaction. Even to the ones suffering severely, it may have come across as a moderate inconvenience that one goes through for love.
This punishment isn’t belted out by a particular gender, and neither is one particular gender victim to it. No gender, no relationship is protected from this erratic behaviour that stems from no logic nor sense. It rises from ego and is suffered by those with low self-esteem.
So many wrote to me. Some said this video was an emergency alarm, a wake-up call. Some shared how they lost some of their near and dear ones to this oppression. And some who had gone through exactly this had the courage to walk out before it was too late. While some who knew what they were going through was wrong had no option but to continue, either because they had no support or there was a child involved. Contrary to belief, this doesn’t only happen amongst partners. It can be in any relationship, a parent and child, a sibling, friends.
I am even more shaken after reading your stories than I was when I saw this clip. I don’t have a solution, and even if I did, it seems easier said than done. But try this — if you can’t eradicate yourself from this horrible place, for once think of what you would advise your loved one to do if they were suffering the same fate. Would it be something like this —
Tolerating abuse is in no way a testimony of your love, and your tolerance should not be asked as proof of it. And please, see it for what it is. Place blame where it rightfully belongs, not on yourself.
Because it is not your fault.
