The University College London researchers used starch because of its resemblance to the body’s extracellular matrix and its natural abundance. This is not metaphorical. Bacteria literally use motors. The bacterial flagellar motor is a rotary nanomachine that lets bacteria swim. It spins anywhere from 6,000 to over 100,000 RPM, depending on conditions. And it does this at near 100 percent efficiency. The motor is built from 20+ different proteins arranged into parts engineers would recognize: a rotor, stator, drive shaft, and propeller-like filament. Power doesn’t come from fuel or batteries. It comes from ion flow, usually protons, moving across the cell membrane. That flow creates torque through tiny shape changes in stator proteins. Rotation follows. Studies published in PNAS and Nature Microbiology have mapped its structure in detail. Work in PLOS Computational Biology shows tight coupling between proton flow and rotation even as speeds change. Which is why this structure keeps showing up in debates. Some point to its apparent “all-or-nothing” design and call it irreducibly complex. Others point to billions of years of incremental evolution, duplication, and repurposing. Same motor. Very different interpretations. What’s not debated is this: At the molecular scale, biology isn’t sloppy. It’s mechanical. Precise.
