NRToday, we are honored to shine a light on two remarkable nurses who have touched countless lives at NRMC. Our DAISY Award nominees, Fawn Slaughter, RN in Med-Surg, and Amber Freeman, RN in ICU, remind us every day what compassionate care truly looks like.
The DAISY Award is a national recognition program that celebrates nurses who deliver extraordinary kindness and clinical excellence when patients and families need it most. It honors the quiet moments of comfort, the reassuring words, and the unwavering dedication that often happen when no one is watching.
Fawn and Amber embody all of this and more. Their hearts for healing, their steady presence during difficult moments, and the way they pour themselves into their patients’ well-being make a difference that cannot be measured.

Your “Leadership/Impact Essay” is one of the “5 Essential Essays” that you MUST have ready at any given moment!
You will need to paint the picture of:
1️⃣ What type of leader you are
2️⃣ Real examples of how you made an impact as a leader.
One strategy that is effective with this type of essay is the “STAR Method”
S: Situation - Describe the background and context of a specific scenario.
T: Task - What was the obstacle or challenge that moved you to take a leadership role?
A: Action - What specific thing(s) did you do that made the impact?
R: Result - What was the result of those specific actions?
⏩️ Macro vs Micro Impact
Write about how you made an impact both individually, and to the larger group (i.e. the organization, your school, community, city, etc.) if possible.
⏩️ Future Impact
Does your personal story of impact and leadership show the readers that you will most likely continue making an impact in the future? Will what you did/do have the possibility to grow into something bigger?
📝 Be Concise
Don’t say in 2-3 sentences what you can say in one. Be sure to stay at or UNDER the word count limit. If the requirements ask for 500 words…. Don’t write a 5,000 word essay. Paint the picture, tell the story and move to the next point.

SKThe Holiday Hideaway community on Guemes Island has partnered with their local CDs and the DNR to better understand and reduce their wildfire risk. This spring they participated in their first community fuels reduction project. 🔥
Homeowners piled limbed branches and dead vegetation from around their homes at the end of their driveways and as a benefit for their hard work, the CDs and DNR provided a WCC crew and chipper to remove the piles. This service reduces the costs for the homeowner and the need to use burning as a management tool.
This project will help the community meet their investment requirement associated with participating in the Firewise USA Program - a national recognition program for communities reducing wildfire at the neighborhood scale.#firewise #Skagit #skagitcounty #wildfire #wcc #americorps

HDStudents from HDSB’s I-STEM program at Aldershot School and Elsie MacGill Secondary School have earned national recognition in the 2025 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. Out of four national finalist teams, two were from HDSB, with Aldershot placing first for a pitch on quantum computing applications in solar energy, and Elsie MacGill placing third for a kinetic energy innovation.
