MA🎨 Jean-Michel Basquiat spent the last few years of his life (1983-1988) living and working in a two-floor building on Great Jones Street in NoHo, NYC.
It was in this building where he created some of his most famous and top-selling works, including “Flexible” (1984), which sold for $45.3 million in 2018, and “In This Case” (1983), which fetched $93.1 million in 2021 - nearly 25% over the high estimate of $75 million!

68"I am not a black artist, I am an artist." It's one of his most famous quotes, but it's also the most misunderstood flex in art history.
In the 80s, the NYC art establishment was desperate to categorize Jean-Michel. They wanted to box him in as a "graffiti artist" or a "primitive" savant. They treated him like an exotic mascot for the elite to collect. But Basquiat saw right through it.
He wasn't denying his identity, his canvases are literally screaming with black history, jazz legends, and police brutality. He was denying the limit. He knew that the label "black artist" came with an invisible glass ceiling, a separate league.
Jean-Michel didn't want to be the best of a specific demographic; he was painting to sit at the same table as Picasso and Twombly. He wasn't competing with his contemporaries he was competing with the canon.
He knew that if you accept the category, you accept the asterisk. And Basquiat only accepted crowns.
