Her image was captured by Wilhelm Brasse, a fellow prisoner forced to document arrivals and deaths. He remembered her face until the end of his life. She was one of 250,000 children murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The photo survived. So did her expression terrified, fragile, unforgettable. Years later, Brazilian artist Anna Amaral colorized the image so the world would see her not as a statistic, not as a ghost but as a real child whose life was stolen. History repeats when forgotten.
